6 Easy Art and Craft Activities To Bond With Your Child

We all know how much a child is burdened with homework, projects and ongoing assessments. In the midst of all the pressure, it is important to provide an outlet for the child to blow off all the steam.

You can spark creativity in your child by indulging in some creative craft ideas for kids at home. Art and craft for kids are essential as it lets them express themselves without any judgment and they get a sense of achievement in creating something new. Every art and craft activity that you would have a purpose. Your child must see that the craft he has created is being put to good use.

There are various creative craft ideas for kids online, but you should plan your art and craft activity according to what you want your child to get exposed to. 1. String Art

String Art is an easy craft for kids as it requires very less concentration, which means that leaves you with a lot of time for snuggles and tickles. Strung art helps improves finger dexterity and improves concentration.

Materials:

  • A canvas – a wooden board/cardboard
  • Different colour strings
  • Board pins
  • A pair of scissors

Method:

  1. Select a shape that you want. For example, a heart, circle, tree, your name, etc. Make an outline of the shape on the board.
  2. Mark pinning points at 2 cm apart each.
  3. Put the pins on the board.
  4. Take a string and start connecting one pin to the other. If you start using a different coloured string, cut the edges off the next string.
  5. You can create a design either inside the outline or outside.

2. Monster Wind Chime

Tissue rolls are perfect for using it for craft (Who knew!) The monster wind chimes are not noisy at all (Thank God!) and teach kids to be resourceful. They can be a good decoration piece for holidays as well.

Material:

  • Tissue roll cardboard
  • Paint
  • Glue
  • Stickers
  • Strings – 4
  • Ribbons of various colours
  • Decorative papers
  • A pair of scissors

Method:

  1. Put glue on the tissue roll and cover it with decorative papers. Let it dry.
  2. Make four holes for the strings. Put the string through the hole and tie it tightly. These strings should be able to let the tissue roll hang perfectly (not tilted).
  3. At the other end of the tissue roll, put some glue and stick ribbons of various lengths. These ribbons will be free-flowing. You can put in any amount of ribbons you want.
  4. You can give a monster face to the tissue roll with some stickers or artwork

3. Finger Puppets

Storytelling is a lot more fun with finger puppets. We all have enjoyed a puppet show in our childhood. Now, you can relive those days by indulging in some fun art and craft at home with your child. You can also produce a puppet show for your family members.

Material:

  • Paper
  • A pair of scissors
  • Glue
  • Colour pencils/ crayons

Method:

  1. Cut the paper in the shape of the character. You can get the outline online.
  2. Make two holes at the bottom of the cutout. These two holes will be for your fingers to go through. Make sure they are not too big or too small.
  3. If you wish to, you can stick the head onto the body for lifted effect.

Leaf painting is a great way to merge Science with Arts. You can go on a leaf hunt with your child with the objective to collect as many different coloured leaves as possible. You can talk about why the colour is different and how plants help humans. After returning home, you can paint the leaves with acrylic colours. You can also put some glitter, sparkles, and what not!

5. Rock Painting

Painting on a paper gets too boring after a point. If you see your child is losing interest in colouring on paper, introduce him to different surfaces to paint on. After a fun day of collecting rocks at the beach, you can paint them after coming back home. A rock from the beach has a smooth surface, which makes it a good canvas. You can print as many as rocks as you want and then put them in a jar.

6. Designing Book Covers

Summer vacation is usually a time when children finally get some time to read their favourite book. Once they are done the reading, you can ask them to design its book cover. You can take a chart paper and cut it in a way that it wraps around the book perfectly. You can also ask them to draw their favourite character and have them narrate the story to you, using the puppets. Your child will love to draw the perfect version of what they think the book was about.
