  • proud of a job well done
  • Positive body image
  • prepared for everyday challenges

Who wouldn’t want these qualities in their children? Every parenting style aims at making children value themselves and others.

Ways to Build Self-esteem in a child

  1. Let them make choices. Even small choices like picking a place to go for holidays, what to have for dinner, what present to give, etc, can polish their decision-making process and make them realize that their opinion matters.
  2. Let them take healthy risks. You can’t control everything and sometimes it is important for them to learn a few lessons on their own. Even if they fail (and sometimes you know they will), let them make the mistake. By doing so, you would teach them the fact of life; failures are bound to happen but they need to learn from them and find success.
  3. Praise them for their hard work, smart work, courteousness, respectful nature, positivity, etc. Appreciation for their hard work and good gestures goes a long way.
  4. Children should be equal partners in getting house chores responsibilities. They should be in charge of their own chores and only report to you once they are done.
  5. Check your children’s company. The way they interact with each other or the company they keep speaks volumes of their personality. If you find anything strange, you should nip it in the bud.
  6. Encourage participation in co-curricular activities. Sport builds team spirit, boosts confidence and encourages healthy competition.
  7. Sit back and relax sometimes. Your children will learn life’s lessons on their own. You can give them the tools to deal with the situations but not solve all their problems.
  8. No one’s perfect and this is something your child should know. Your child should be striving for excellence and not perfection.

A child with good self-esteem is well-prepared to face the future. A healthy Self-esteem contributes to one’s being happy with himself and with the people around him. Self-esteem is a child does not only come by praising the child, but it is also built brick by brick.
