Positive Attributes of Life – How it influences our daily activities

Recently, I had a very stressful day at the office. So much so that I thought I will explode. I hated the work I was doing and the colleagues I was surrounded with…my life in general! By the time I reached home, I had already called my friend to complain about my life. Being a good friend she participated in the conversation wholeheartedly.

I was happy to reach home. I just wanted to unwind. I reached out for a book to unwind because even the whining was getting on my nerves. I grabbed the first book off my father’s bookshelf. Halfway through reading the book, I came across a quote that changed the way I look at life.

Swami Vivekananda once said, “Heart is a very good fertilizer; anything we plant- love, hate, fear, hope, revenge, jealousy-surely grows and bears fruit. We have to decide what to harvest.”

Isn’t it a scrumptious piece of food for thought? What do we decide to harvest every day? What is that we all wish for? If our thoughts and actions play a vital role in who we become, isn’t it important to be very mindful of what we choose to think and do?

I wasted an entire day focussing and sowing negativity in my heart. It was so easy for me to whine about my job that I forgot that it was the same job I tried so hard to get.

Having positive attributes of life is difficult. Our innate nature is to be defensive. In fact, this is the very facet of our nature that made us successful warriors and hunters. The ability to think about all possibilities, especially negative aspect, is not all that bad.

Thinking positively doesn’t come naturally to humans. We need to train our minds to focus on the positive attributes of life. In practice, we need to adopt several ways to be positive. To untune our mind or to tune our mind to think in a certain way, we must practice the art of being positive every day until, over a period of time, it becomes a way of life.

Here are the five tips to make sure you are using your thoughts in a positive manner:

  • Whenever you catch your mind thinking negative things just STOP. Try to think at least one positive thing about the same situation. Breathe in and breathe out. Restart your brain and get to work.
  • Meditate for as long as you can, even if it means 5 mins a day. Meditation is a powerful tool to train your mind to think positive.
  • Choose a mantra for the day. For example, “Today, I will talk to people I have never spoken to.” or “Today, I will be polite to people no matter what.”
  • Use an app. Nowadays, there are several apps that will help you calm down or think positively.
  • Make a gratitude list. You will be surprised to see how many people have touched your lives in a positive manner.

See opportunities at every step of life:

People who see opportunities in various challenges thrown by life are capable of climbing to the top of the success ladder. Perseverance, constant hard work, ability to analyze and take the right decisions at critical times are some of the qualities that are the mark of a successful person.

To imbibe such strong qualities, one needs to have positive attributes of life. You won’t have enough time on your hand to work on yourself if you are constantly thinking negatively. Eventually, you become what you think. Your thinking makes you stand out in the crowd and it has the capacity to turn the table in your favour even at the worst situations.

No book can teach you to think positively. It’s all about self-motivation. Cultivating positivity as a daily routine and constant practice of affirmation can help you see light during the toughest times of your life. There comes a time in everyone’s life when we feel lost. We feel like we have reached the end of the tunnel. These are the times when people with positive nature stand out. Self-confidence automatically appears with strong determination and motivation.

How have I implemented this in my life? I don’t whine about my work anymore. It is the most difficult thing to do. Whenever I feel stress or anxiety building up, I stop, breathe, and restart. I meditate in the morning to find my centre. I try to find one positive in people. Genuinely complimenting others has become my second nature. Having positive attributes of life is possible, trust me! Be the sun that shines and brings shine to each other’s lives.
