Household Chores for Children and its Benefits

There is always a debate on ‘whether children should get themselves involved in household chores or not’. Most of the parents think that children should learn household activities and be responsibilities as they grow up.

Children can learn a lot from household chores. They will learn how to take care of themselves and their belongings. Also, it adds a sense of maturity in growing children. Most importantly it teaches children a massive set of life skills such as responsibility, how to be independent, teamwork, how to respect others and many more. Household chores like cleaning, cooking, shopping, organizing various things will benefit children forever. It perfectly makes sense to teach these chores to children in order to make them independent and self-reliant.

Household Chores for Children:-

Below listed points are some of the household chores children can learn and perform at home

1) Toddlers and PreSchoolers:

Toddlers and Preschool children, who are generally of the age 2-5, can be given simple chores. They can pick up their toys every day after they finish playing and put them back in the toy basket on their own.

Eventually, preschoolers will learn to pick up the materials in their room and put them in the right place. Also, they can put their dishes away after a meal. These sorts of chores teach them that they need to be responsible for their own messes.

Since preschoolers usually can’t read the sentences completely, it is a good idea to make a chart that includes their everyday task. For each task, a sticker or a small self-made creative card can be given as an incentive or reward to keep them motivated.

2) School attending children:

When children begin attending school, their responsibility with chores should increase as well. School-age children should continue with chores that relate to picking up after themselves. For example, teach children to put their shoes and backpacks away when they get home from school.

The other chores may include, guiding them step-by-step on how to put his/her clothes away in the laundry basket. Also, they should learn how to fold their clothes and neatly arrange them in the wardrobe.

Along with these tasks, children of this age can water the garden and indoor plants. When they watch a plant grow, they will be proud of their achievement. It is very important for the parents to praise the efforts of their child without expecting perfection. This will further motivate him/her to learn new chores and keep up the spirit!!

Other than these daily chores, there’s many more work that children can learn and perform such as, helping in preparing meals under supervision, grocery shopping along with the parents, arranging their books and toys neatly in the shelves, tidy -up their rooms, Clean table after a meal etc.

These life skills are important as children grow and when they go out of their homes they will be Responsible and confident. Many parents feel guilty for making their children do household chores, but never realize they will learn so much via these basic skills. Not only do they are important and helpful, but also responsible.

At Brainy Stars International School, the teachers emphasize these life skills and motivate the children to learn them. Children are taught life values that they will cherish forever.
