MYP Art Exhibition Winners 2019-2020

Simran Chawla (Grade 10)

"Manifesting Elegance"

This canvas painting has been inspired by the art-style of Surrealism, where several techniques like distortion, juxtaposition and displacement were used. This painting hence displays the emergence of beauty, where a dark-skinned woman is striving to gain her identity. I aimed to spread awareness regarding a few unfortunate issues prevalent in the world.

Through the use of chains/thorns and the rainbow (hues of red, orange and yellow) I have looked into the negative emotions of the woman. The rainbow represents seven emotions of the woman being; aggression, embarrassment, insult, anguish, low self-esteem, stress and grief. Finally, with the use of the flowers and the dove (symbols of calmness) in the foreground, I have represented the attainment of freedom, refreshment of thoughts as well as the flourishing future of the woman. The dove signifies her struggle for achievement in all aspects of life.

To conclude, the painting revolves around the idea of a lady emerging out of racial discrimination, along with the development of stereotypical ideas to a more open-minded system.

Congratulations to all the winners of the best entries selected during the MYP Arts exhibition. Well done to all the budding artists whose artworks adorned the walls of the MPH.
