Back to School: Preparing for the Year Ahead

The summer will fade away into monsoon and the school doors will open again. Soon, it will be back to school; back to the desk; back to learning. Vacations will be replaced by blackboards, science and mathematics classes. But, does this have to mean boredom and a lack of enthusiasm? The answer is a clear no. And here’s how you can prepare for the academic year ahead and make it exciting!

Back to Schoolback to school

The Convincing Act

Granted that parents have a tough time convincing children on their first day at school. After all, it’s a completely new world for kids and most school gates are witness to their cries. As the year’s progress, the cries are replaced by a mix of lethargic sighs and some hidden curiosity and eagerness.

Parents, by identifying the reasons for curiosity, can help the children train their minds to look forward to school. Talking about how wonderful it would be to meet their friends again, or how they can listen to their favourite teacher or ride a bicycle to school, is probably the only desirable bribery that will also pay off!

The Larger Purpose

Further, work actively with children to set short and long term goals for their future. The last week of vacations is an ideal time to do so. Having conversations about how every academic year is a step towards achieving goals will only benefit them.

Consequently, they will gain in confidence and the urge to stay committed and focused in the direction of their goals. Doing so every year, without fail will gradually transform the doubt into a roadmap for the future. You can rest assured, children will become independent and work towards developing skill sets required to meet success.

One Step Back and A Giant Leap

Revision is a crash course of sorts. It is like an alarm reminder of what’s gone by and what’s in store. Both parents and children would have noticed how revision helps in gaining better grades. Applying the same principle between academic years not only helps in familiarizing with the syllabus.

In addition to that, it helps in understanding the deficiencies of the previous years learning process. Subsequently, it provides insights into areas of improvement for the year ahead. As a concurrence, they can identify the steps to be taken for realignment and reassessment of the approach to be adopted.

In conclusion, let’s remember that school is much more than a few hours of classes and grades. Impressing this upon children is a responsibility that both the school and parents share. So, the onus is on parents, to begin with. Make your child realise that back to school is back to learning and not back to mundane boredom. Make your child realise that back to school is a giant leap to a happy future.
