Ever wondered how teachers show students they care? There are many ways best teachers show they care on daily basis. They care about your child as their own.
We, parents, leave our kids in the hands of professional teachers. We expect them to teach our kids, be a mother and a father to them, adjust their moral compass and much more.
Teachers are made up of compassion, understanding and knowledge. They are the reason why every day our child wakes up in the morning and is truly excited to go to school. They handle an average of 30 students per class. With so many students begging for attention, we also wonder whether teachers are actually showing how much they care.
It is not in the big gestures that the best teachers show they care, it is in the small ones. Here is a list of things teachers do to show your child how much they care.
1.Welcoming the children
A teacher is considered great because of the rapport she builds with her students. The first day of the session is the day when a teacher will plant a seed of likeability, trust and compassion in her students’ minds. While welcoming the students, she might talk about her experience, a bit of her family and friends, and her life.
2.Greeting
Teachers reach before your children arrive and leave after they have left for the day. Greeting students is a great way to begin a day. Many teachers in the US have personalized handshake to greet the students.
3.Empathize
Students spend most of their time of the day in the school. Teachers are the primary source of values. In the world where it is cool to be a bully and rebel, teachers have a huge task at hand when it comes to teaching what is empathy. They will take out time to work with the parents to ensure that the student is given proper guidance.
4.Work with the disengaged first
If you complain of your child not concentrating on chores at home, chances are he is doing the same in the classroom as well. Teachers have an eye for identifying the disengaged ones and work their session plan around them. A great teacher will try to accommodate all types of learners in her lesson so that no one is left behind.
5.Work together with their goals
Gone are the days when knowledge was forced upon the students and teachers expected them to memorize everything. These days students are vocal about what they want to learn and how they want to learn. Every student has a goal and wants to work towards it. A great teacher will identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses and work together with you and your child to achieve it.
6.Actively listening vs Listening
Listening and actively listening to students are two extremely different things. Actively listening to the student makes them feel validated and can improve the student-teacher bond multifold. This is one of the most effective ways teachers show they care.
If your child tells you that the teacher asked a feedback on the activity they did that day, your child has a great teacher. She is showing the students that everyone in the classroom is equal. She is also showing the kids that it is okay to fail and how to use the feedback to make necessary changes.
8.Use sorter voice
A screaming person, whether teacher or a parent, can’t achieve anything. The minute the someone starts screaming, you put up a wall. This wall is very difficult to break. Similar is the case with students. Softer voice and stern words can work magic. A great teacher knows voice modulation to communicate with the students like no other.
9.Appreciation of work
Everyone needs appreciation for his or her hard work. It is one of the most important sources of self-motivation. Appreciating work of students can boost their confidence. It also tells them that their teacher took out the time to go through their work or was actively listening to the discussion. The best teacher also knows that too much of appreciation can also be damaging. It can turn a good student into an arrogant student.
Teachers do more than just teach in the classroom. They take on a role of a parent, a friend, a confidant and a guidance counsellor. Best teachers show they care in many ways and in turn, teaches the kids to love and respect each other.
