The use of social media is now a growing trend among most people especially students and teenagers. With an ability to access multiple platforms for social interactions for various purposes more and more people have started to have multiple social media accounts for interactions, sharing of ideas, voicing opinions and spreading news. Especially since the year 2010, there has been a significant increase in the number of users of various social media platforms and this has especially seen a sharp rise among teenagers and students. The most popular social media platforms today are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google Plus, Tumblr, Pinterest and the list goes on and on. Along with social media, a number of chat and messaging applications such as WhatsApp, Hike, Snapchat etc.. Have become popular and frequent in their usage among people, especially teens and students.

Without a doubt, these platforms have helped us connect with people across the world, gather information and have eased long-distance communications. Social media is also now a popular online marketing platform for various start-ups and help people make others aware of new discoveries and latest trends. Many young people have popularised themselves or their talent through these platforms, be it a new band, their artwork, cooking skills and what not. These platforms have also helped people connect with their old schoolmates, their alumni committee, and altogether revolutionised reconnecting.

As much as of a boon they are, Social media can also have adverse effects on people’s lives, especially teenagers and students. It is important to curb their usage as prolonged use of it can cause addiction. A famous and Credible entrepreneurial coach, Simon Sinek states that An addiction to gadgets and social media is as dangerous or equivalent to substance addiction. The usage of these social media tools, release dopamine or otherwise known as the “feel good hormone” in youngsters, the same hormone released during usage of substance which is why youngsters tend to get addicted to social media. Prolonged usage of these tools has been linked to psychological issues such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. The use of social media is indeed helpful and makes a person savvy but if not used for the right purpose, in the right amounts, can be dangerous and counterproductive.  Here are a few ways to use social media in building creative ideas and productivity among youngsters.

  1. Use social media to keep in touch with real-world issues and current affairs. Social media can be used as an alternative news network to learn about things that are generally not covered by mainstream media or television.
  2. Promote a good and productive cause on social media. Whether it is popularising your new band, creating events for pet adoptions, creating informative pages, rallying for women’s rights or spreading the word about Swacch Bharat Rallies, It is important to make sure of a productive outcome whenever there is a use of these social media tools
  3. Connect with Professionals and their pages on Social Media to follow their latest content. Whether it is a recipe page, an entrepreneurial icon, Art galleries or Article publishers, using social media to connect to them and train your own soft skills is one of the best ways to boost creative ideas using social media.
  4. Share with people about what you do and let them know of your skills and work. It is possible that someone could be looking for a person with your skill set and you might be of assistance to him or her. Why not use social media to be of help to other people thereby fulfilling the true spirit of socialization.

Social media, if used in the right way, can work wonders, It is also important to keep these aside and focus on ‘on ground’ issues such as relationships, family, academics and work. Neglecting these over social media must be avoided at all costs as it is counterproductive to the benefits of social media. In the end, It is the ultimate philosophy of keeping everything we do in a state of constant balance. Social life, time spent online, virtual connections always take the second place in comparison with greater aspects of life such as relationships, love, goals and humanity. Don’t let Virtuality get the best of you when there’s much more to life than social media. Sure it helps creative ideas, but it’s important you create yourself first.
