In the year 2003, 165 children from marginalized families started a new chapter in life, huddled together on a small roof-top in a school in Rajendranagar, Bengaluru. Today: We operate 4 K-10 schools and 1 Junior College (Grades 11 &12) spread across Bangalore We have more than 1800 children, 52 % of whom are girls Our students are drawn from 99 slum communities and 4 Orphanages across Bangalore. In Sanskrit, the word Parikrma means a circle. At Parikrma we call this a journey of transformation – or ‘The Circle of Life’. Each child is supported right from age 5 till they turn 25. We have the highest attendance in the country at 96% and the lowest drop-out rate at less than 1%. We also bear the costs of our children's further education as well, either in the form of formal college education or vocational training. While we are concentrating on the overall development of the children, we also work closely with their families to ensure a safe and sustainable environment back home as well. We conduct vocational and skills enrichment workshops to ensure basic hygiene, alcohol de-addiction camps, basic health check-ups, financial planning, counseling for distressed families. Parikrma focuses on the real meaning of education and development. Through advocacy and proven case studies, we influence systems, policies and processes of education at both the regional, national and global levels. Our way of scaling is to share our model and expertise with government school teachers through our Education Transformation Centre. Parikrma Humanity Foundation has been awarded the Derozio Award for excellence in special education and social commitment. Parikrma also received the Governor’s award for exemplary social work in January 2007. The organization is now a chapter included in Cornell University and IIMB. We received the CNBC Digitalizing India Award 2016 for the category of Digital Innovation in Driving Social Impact and the CSR Awards for being one of the 50 Most Impactful Social Innovators in 2016. Our graduates are leading change. A software engineer with Cisco Systems, an assistant chef at Hilton, a dialysis therapist in Manipal Hospital, a dentist, an activist, and avid blogger, an actress - a student pursuing law at the prestigious National Law School, biotechnology at MS Ramaiah... the list grows longer and diverse with each passing year. We are Parikrma and these are our changemakers! Vision and Mission Parikrma’s mission is to unleash the potential of underserved children, enabling them to live their lives on equal terms and become valuable contributing members of society. Reforming education in India has become a numbers game. Bigger, it seems, is better. But is it? The government, as well as most non-profit organizations, are working together to improve education as if it is just a statistic. They are addressing these huge numbers without addressing the quality of education. The statistics have, at best, shown marginal change. Is a child, then, just a number to be improved incrementally? There is a huge gap that exists between those who get a good education at private schools and those who have access only to the sub-standard government schools and low-cost, poor quality private schools. This gap creates the inequality that results in the privileged few going on to college and getting meaningful jobs, while others simply drop out of the system. This gap needs to be addressed. And that is what Parikrma is attempting to do – bridging the gap by transforming the content of education. We believe that it is because the poor have no access to high-quality education, they are unable to break out from the cycle of poverty. Hence, generations of the poor are condemned to live in abject poverty and despair. Parikrma, hence, is a catalyst for effecting fundamental change in the way people perceive education of the poor and the marginalized.
