Ha-ha. How ironic.
Maybe the burger is not getting enough attention as this is World Nutrition Week 2019.
Anyway, let’s get to the point.
My grandmother is 80 years old and she has travelled almost the entire India. On her 80th birthday, she gave me the list of places she wants to visit and that had France in it. And here I am who cannot get up from my couch on weekends. (Guilty!) We talk about generation gap and scoff at their conventional thinking leading to a lack of understanding. But isn’t this a generation gap when an 80-year-old woman is active than me in my 20s? Yes, of course. This is a generation gap of lifestyle. As years are passing by, stress levels are rising with hectic schedules and automatically fingers are tapping on food delivery options. The world is turning into a big giant hub of junk food. We are consciously overlooking the disadvantages of fast food and as a result, nutrition is taking a back seat.
I understand the fact that during the time of our grandparents, life was comparatively easy. It was not hectic and stressful as it is today. People had a few expectations and also a few resources of readymade food to tempt them. This way, healthy food could find a way in their daily diet. Also, the rate of adulteration was less which means people mostly ate organic food that contributed to a healthier life. On the contrary, today we deal with a lot of stress, lifestyle costs a king’s ransom and the schedules have become tight. Thus we tend to ignore the harmful effects of junk food in the moment of extreme hunger and less time.
Kids who are born in the era of fast food see the mouth-watering advertisements, inviting outlets and the whole culture of online and quick food while growing up. They also see their parents opting for junk food most of the time and eventually, the kids adapt to this lifestyle. The answer to the question of why nutrition is important goes off on a tangent. And the vicious cycle continues.
Now, instead of going round and round about what’s wrong with the world, let’s get to the point. What can you do to stay healthy? Let’s think about the importance of child nutrition and the effects of nutrition on child development. It is human nature to repel extreme and sudden changes in life. So, let’s take some baby steps to inculcate healthy eating habits in our life.
Involve your kids in the cooking process during weekends. It can be a fun weekend activity. You can introduce your kids to different vegetables, fruits, and meats and make them aware of their nutritional value. This way, kids would enjoy cooking and learn the importance of nutrition, first hand.

It is unreasonable to expect that once you start eating healthy, you can wipe out the craving for junk food 100% from your family. Going extreme won’t help and you’ll be back to square one in no time. Learning to make better choices and planning your intake of junk food is the middle ground. Nutritionist Teresa Fung says, “Don’t do it in the heat of the moment.” She suggests to plan and decide how many treats you are allowed each week. Thus, planning the cheat day beforehand will certainly help you.
Growing your own food is certainly a good idea to eating healthy and help you stay away from the dangers of food preservatives. When you grow your vegetables on your own, you develop a connection with nature and automatically feel motivated to eat healthy and organic food. Even if you have less space in the house, no worries! You can get so many tips for setting up a small kitchen garden online. This can also work as a good weekend activity, keeping you healthy, active and fresh.
See, being healthy isn’t that difficult in the 21st century, is it? Little changes in eating habits can help you and your family stay fit as a fiddle. This year, World Nutrition Week starts from September 1st, 2019, let’s resolve to be healthier and happier!
