Rava Dhokla with Chutney | Kids Recipe

Rava Dhokla with their pillow-like fluffiness makes for a soul-satisfying snack for both children and adults. This adored snack of the Gujaratis can be made at a moment’s notice with ingredients that are readily found in most Indian households. This makes perfect kids lunch box recipe.

All You Need Is:

For steaming:-

  • Rava or Semolina 1 cup
  • Dahi (sour) or curd 1 cup
  • ¼th inch Ginger + 1 Green Chillie paste
  • ENO (Fruit Salt) 1 small packet
  • Oil to grease the dhokla pan
  • Salt

For tempering:-

  • Oil 2 tbsp
  • Rai or mustard seeds 1 tsp
  • Jeera or cumin ½ tsp
  • Til or sesame seeds 1 tsp
  • Chopped green chilli 2

For garnishing (all are optional and as per personal taste and preference):-

  • Pepper powder 1 tbsp
  • Chillie powder 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves 2 tsp

Makes: Enough for 3 servings

How to prepare Rava Dhokla:

  1. Mix all the ingredients under ‘For steaming’ except oil and ENO to make a lump-free batter that is slightly thicker than idli batter or pancake batter consistency. Add water to batter in case batter seems too thick. Let the batter rest for 30 minutes.Rava Dhokla
  2. Prepare the steamer by putting about 4 cups of water in it and putting it on the stove to heat.Rava Dhokla
  3. Grease a dhokla pan with some oil. In case you do not have a dhokla pan, you can use any steel or another metal container that fits into the steamer/cooker and is about 1 ½ to 2 inches in depth.
  4. Add ENO to the batter once it has rested for 30 minutes. Mix the batter till you see air bubbles on the surface of the batter; do not over mix it.Rava Dhokla
  5. Pour batter immediately into the greased pan or container and put into the steamer.Rava Dhokla
  6. Steam dhokla for about 15 to 20 minutes.
  7. Take pan or container out of the steamer and allow it to cool down for 5 minutes.Rava Dhokla
  8. Cut dhokla into squares or diamonds.
  9. Sprinkle pepper powder and/or chilli powder.Rava Dhokla
  10. Heat oil in a pan and add jeera, mustard seeds and green chillies for making the tempering.Rava Dhokla
  11. Switch off the flame and pour the tempering all over the dhokla once jeera and til have become a light brown.Rava Dhokla
  12. Chop coriander leaves finely and sprinkles on the dhokla.Rava Dhokla
  13. Serve warm or allow to cool before packing into Tiffin BoxRava Dhokla

A wonderful accompaniment for the dhoklas is a green chutney made the Gujarati way.

How to prepare Green Chutny?

Take a medium-sized bunch of coriander leaves, green chillies as per taste roasted chana dal as per the thickness desired in the chutney, lime juice, ½ tsp of jeera and salt. Put all of these into a food processor and pulverize. Viola! Green chutney is ready to be consumed.Rava Dhokla
